Video editing for Instagram: getting your Reels right
Format, hook, pacing, subtitles, sound: the editing guide that turns raw footage into Reels that actually hold attention.
On Instagram, a Reel forgives nothing: people scroll, judge, move on. Between two videos, it is usually the edit — not the gear, not the budget — that decides whether anyone stops. Good video editing for Instagram catches attention in the first second, keeps a tight pace and stays readable with the sound off. Here, step by step, is what we apply to turn raw footage into Reels that genuinely hold an audience.
Format first: 9:16 and safe zones
A Reel is edited vertically in 9:16 (1080 × 1920 px), full screen. That is the first mistake with videos recycled from another format: black bars or an off-centre subject are enough to make people scroll past. Think about the safe zones too: Instagram overlays the handle, the caption and the action buttons. Keep your subtitles and key information in the middle third of the frame, never right at the bottom or the top.
On length, there is no magic rule. For a simple message, 7 to 20 seconds is often enough; for storytelling or a tutorial, 30 to 60 seconds holds up — as long as every second earns its place. A long Reel that drags does more damage than a short, dense one.
The first 3 seconds: the hook
Retention is decided immediately. If the first three seconds do not land, the rest of the edit will never be seen. Forget intros, stretching logos and "hey everyone". Open on your strongest shot, a clear promise or an intriguing question. A trick we use often: edit the core of the video first, then come back and pick the best moment as the very first frame.
Pacing: cut so it never drags
Editing a Reel is above all a question of rhythm. You tighten the shots, remove dead air, hesitations and breaths. You vary the shot sizes — wide, close, insert — and add b-roll to illustrate the point and break the monotony of a face to camera.
The secret that reads as "professional": landing some of your cuts and transitions on the beats of the music. Eye and ear then move together, and the video feels twice as dynamic without a single flashy effect.
Subtitles: most people watch on mute
A large share of social video is watched without sound, at least at the start. Animated subtitles that are legible and well contrasted are therefore not optional: they carry the message and lift retention. Use a clean typeface, an outline or a light background so it stays readable over any image, and reveal word by word or in short phrases to give the reading a rhythm.
Sound does half the work
Audio is hugely underrated. The right music, sound effects placed on the transitions (woosh, pop, impacts) and a consistent voice level transform how good a Reel feels. Mind the rights too: use Instagram's native audio library to ride trending sounds without risking a block for protected music.
The mistakes that sink a Reel
- An intro that runs too long before getting to the point.
- Text cut off or hidden by Instagram's interface.
- Too many effects and transitions distracting from the message.
- A poor export — always export in 1080p at a high bitrate.
- No call to action: say clearly what to do next.
Do it yourself… or hand it to an editor
With CapCut or DaVinci Resolve you can already go a long way editing yourself — it is an excellent school for understanding what works. But keeping up several Reels a week takes time, consistency and a real editor's eye. Handing that step to a professional video editor saves hours, guarantees a consistent quality and keeps your energy for shooting and ideas.
That is exactly what we do at Randy Guine, from Lausanne and for the whole of French-speaking Switzerland: have a look at our video editing service and our Reels packages.
In short
A Reel that performs is not down to luck: a properly handled vertical format, an immediate hook, tight pacing, legible subtitles and careful sound. Apply these principles to your next edit… or send us your footage and we will take care of the rest.
